About CSD 12
The second substantive session of the CSD since the World Summit
on Sustainable Development, CSD 12 will instigate the Commissions
new 2-year Implementation-cycle structure. Meeting from 14-30
April 2004, CSD 12 will take the form of a review meeting, seeking
to identify cahllenges and constraints as well as the opportunities
fro the implementaiton of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation
and Agenda 21.
In this first cycle the focus will be on the following thematic
cluster of issuse:
- Water
- Sanitation
- Human Settlements
A set of cross cutting issues shall also be addressed, including:
Finance, Technology Transfer; Capacity Building; Gender Equity;
Education; Poverty Eradication; Consumption & Production;
and the Means of Implemntation.
The review of progress on these issues will initially be at
the national level with governments requested to provide national
reports on a voluntary basis. Thereafter the UN Regional Economic
Commissions were invited to host regional preparatory meetings
(see right). Civil society are invited to contribute to the
review process at all levels.
The global session, next April will bring together the outcomes
of these regional meetings to produce a global assessment. In
addition, the first 3 days of the session will form the first
preparatory meeting to the Global review of the Barbados Plan
of Action on Small Isalnd Developing States (SIDS).
CSD 13, in 2005, shall then undertake the second phase of the
2-year cycle by conducting a policy session on these same issues. |
