Stakeholder Forum is arranging an evening seminar on nuclear
power and climate change.
Recent evidence shows that levels of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere are increasing even faster than previously estimated,
and the dangers of rapid climate change are becoming more pressing.
Power stations using fossil fuels are one major source of greenhouse
gas emissions. Could greater use of nuclear power be part of
the answer?
Some commentators think that the answer should be "Yes"
and that the time is ripe for another look at this option. Others
point to the very serious environmental problems and security
risks associated with nuclear power and the fact that nobody
has resolved the problems of long-term disposal of radioactive
waste. They think the answer must lie in wind and solar and
other renewable sources of energy, and a step change towards
much higher levels of energy efficiency in all sectors.
Our seminar will be initiated by some of the leading champions
on both sides of this debate. It is a timely debate since the
parties to the Climate Change Convention will be meeting next
month in Argentina. They know that throughout the world countries
are struggling to meet their Kyoto commitments for 2010, and
that much more stringent attempts to reduce greenhouse gases
will be needed beyond that. The debate in the UK is likely to
be mirrored in many other parts of the world.
The debate will bring together leading UK stakeholders from
across the energy, government, science, NGO, media and religion
sectors, as well as leading opinion-formers in this area.
The opening speakers will be followed by questions to the speakers
and then an open forum debate.
Location:
The seminar will take place from 6.30 pm to 9 pm on November
