World Environment Day 2004 Theme: Wanted! Seas and Oceans – Dead or Alive?
The city of Barcelona, known for its commitment to culture and urban renewal, will be hosting World Environment Day (WED) 2004, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced last week. This year’s WED theme, “Wanted! Seas and Oceans – Dead or Alive?” reflects not only the activities in Barcelona, which as part of the Forum is holding several activities related to seas and oceans, but UNEP’s important activities in the field of the marine environment and sustainable coastal livelihoods. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of UNEP, said the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), which in 2002 drew up a Plan of Implementation with time tables and targets, had thrown down several challenges in respect to fisheries, marine protected areas, small island developing States and marine pollution.

The Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and the planning committee of the Second Caribbean Environmental Forum and Exhibition (CEF-2), invite you to the exciting city of Port of Spain, to participate in this important event being held from 31 May to 4 June 2004. Under the theme ‘Energising Caribbean Sustainability’ the CEF-2 will serve as a platform to focus attention on key environmental concerns of the region and internationally. This event is important for the Caribbean and indeed all Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) since it is expected to provide a platform for the regional observance of this year's World Environment Day and a forum for broad-based discussions with respect to the Caribbean region position at the 10 year review of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Implementation of Sustainable Development in SIDS meeting later in the year (August 2004).
