Regional Preparations Gain Momentum for the 10-year Review of the Barbados Programme of Action (BPoA+10) for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
In August/September 2004, an International Meeting is scheduled to take place in Mauritius to discuss recommendations for further implementation of the BPoA. Regional preparatory meetings held in 2003 for the International Meeting highlighted actions taken and the challenges faced in the implementation of BPoA. The Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting in Nassau aims to produce a consolidated position of SIDS from all regions, which will be further considered at a 3-day preparatory session for the International Meeting held during the 12th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in April 2004.

Greenpeace and the UK-based Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society have joined forces to try to help the thousands of marine mammals killed annually in UK waters. Thousands of dolphins are being killed each year, and they are concerned that local populations could be pushed to extinction.

Awash in a Sea of Synthetics
A flood of junk is flowing into the sea – some to circulate endlessly in currents, some to be eaten by fish, and then by humans, warns TV documentary maker Ian Connacher. He has produced a feature piece on ocean plastic sampling highlighting the implications of land-based sources of pollution on the marine environment. The feature aired last week on Canada’s Discovery Channel and can be viewed by clicking here (following the ‘Plastic Oceans’ link in Thursday 15th January's archive). The work was also featured in a newspaper piece.
