Mountain Day 'Mountains - Source of Freshwater'
The UN General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards,
as 'International Mountain Day' in recognition of the crucial role
that mountains play in our lives. This December 11 marked the first
International Mountain Day, the theme for which is "Mountains,
source of freshwater", in keeping with the International Year
of Freshwater 2003. Mountains cover one quarter of the Earth's surface
and are an important source of freshwater, sheltering essential ecosystems
and biodiversity. Much of the water used to produce food, electricity
and to supply clean drinking water is drawn from mountains. Due to
growing demographic and economic pressures, mountain environments
are increasingly at risk.

Rallying
Around an Underwater Preserve
Almost 98 percent of all Philippine reefs are threatened by human
activities, according to an analysis of threats to coral reefs across
Southeast Asia by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The "Reefs
at Risk" report found that Apo Island is one of the few areas
in the Philippines where the level of human pressure is low and coral
ecosystems are doing well. Other fishing villages, faced with dwindling
fish harvests, degraded marine ecosystems, and increasingly difficult
lives, have looked upon Apo as the prototype of what can be accomplished
by managing fisheries more sustainably. And a number of experts are
looking at this type of marine reserve as an important model for the
Philippines and elsewhere.

Kenyan
fishers at odds with flower farms
Two Kenyan fishers land their canoe on the edge of Lake Naivasha,
tipping their silver catch on the grass under the eager eyes of their
employer. The meager haul of 20 bass — worth 800 shillings ($10)
— is a far cry from what fishers working for Stanley Mungai
would have netted a few years back. Mungai, like many living near
the shore, blames the environmental impact of 30 or so flower farms
that have been set up around the lake in the past decade.
